There are times in our lives when we have trouble remembering just how amazing we are. When we allow the hatred and disrespect people have seep into our very beings and often, we don't even realize it has happened. We allow people to treat our genders like an insult and don't even realize we've allowed them to do so. Sometimes, we've heard it so much in our lives that we allow that nonsense to come out of our own mouths.
I know for the past few weeks I have been struggling with self-esteem issues. I have looked at women whom I have believed to be so much prettier than I am. Women who are so thin and fit that our society would call them "perfect." I have been so down in the dumps about myself-- from the freckles on my face to the weird bruise I have on my foot. I have looked in the mirror and wanted to break it because I don't like what I see. I have listened to the voices from so many time in the past--voices that whisper "You run like a girl, you throw like a girl, who drive like a girl" . . . and so many other negative voices. Then, I saw this commercial. Take a moment and watch it if you haven't seen it already and ignore that the commercial is for a tampon company. The message of this commercial is something I think girls struggle with everyday.
Why in the world am I allowing people to use my gender as an insult? Why in the world am I allowing the opinion of others dictate how I feel about myself? Why am I letting other people put a value on my self-worth, my dignity and my respect for myself?
Think about it. Why do we allow others to do this to us? It's time we stop listening to the voices whispering or even yelling horrible things and start listening to the voice each of us was born with-- the voice that loves us as we are.
